Tips for the dayAs you do your online/mail order shopping, consider making your gifts earth-conscious and meaningful:For the person with everything Candles are important ritual objects for the season, and they make wonderful gifts. But did you know that most candles are made of paraffin, which comes from petroleum, a non-renewable resource? The natural, renewable alternative: beeswax candles. Other benefits of beeswax candles: slow burning and sweet honey-like scent. One of my favorite suppliers for beeswax candles: Chase Honey Company of Washington State. Another holiday favorite is bayberry candles, but these take a tremendous harvest to make -- a bushel of berries yields 4 to 5 pounds of wax. "A bayberry candle burned to the socket brings food to the larder and gold to the pocket." Abundant Earth has true Bayberry candles, along with an entire collection of earth-friendly candles. Food gifts that help the earthMy favorite: Endangered Species Chocolate Earth-Conscious Holiday CardsConsider buying holiday cards that express your concern for the earth -- buy recycled or purchase cards that give back in some way... Here are some ways you can do just that:UNICEF Cards: available online, and at many stores including Ikea and Pier 1. You can purchase recycled cards with season-embracing images. Every card supports UNICEF's work. Sierra Club: holiday cards are printed on recycled paper with soy-based inks. These beautiful winter holiday cards support the Sierra Club. Rosetti Designs Another fine source for holiday cards is Drawbridge, a nonprofit arts program for homeless children. Every card you buy helps a homeless child. $11 for 8 in several designs. Drawbridge Store also has tote bags and other gifts with the same designs. |
