And Today...
Today many of us yearn to make the holiday season
more meaningful, more loving, perhaps more spiritual.

Candlegrove traces the winter holiday season daily from Thanksgiving through Epiphany.

November 28, 2007

You may already be experiencing your earliest sunsets as the days grow shorter toward winter solstice. Surprising, isn't it? From here on out in many locations, the days grow shorter by sunrise occurring later and later.

Don't believe me? Check it out for your location!

Tip for the day

Is it cold where you are? Are you familiar with Operation One Warm Coat, which kicks into high gear around this time? I'm proud to note that this excellent organization got its start in my hometown of San Francisco some 15 years ago. Now it's found nearly nationwide. Find a place where you can donate a warm coat you no longer wear here or consider whether you can start a collection where you are.

Online shopping tip

The Rwanda Path to Peace Collection, available at Macys.com, is a series of exquisitely crafted Rwandan baskets, each one inspired by a traditional Rwandan design and made entirely by hand using a centuries-old technique.

The sale of these baskets puts real, sustainable income into the hands of the Rwandan women weavers, changing their lives in remarkable ways.

If your holiday celebration depends on knowing sunrise and/or sunset times for winter solstice or any other day in your location, find it online at the U.S. Naval Observatory. The database covers 22,000 US locations. For world locations, you'll need your latitude and longitude.

This site also lists solstices and equinoxes through 2020. You'll need to convert to your time zone from Universal Time.
